Secondary Conditions Veterans Often Miss

← Back to Blog

What Are Secondary Conditions?

A secondary condition is a disability caused or worsened by an already service-connected condition. Many veterans miss out on benefits because they don't realize how their conditions are connected.

Common Secondary Conditions

1. Sleep Apnea

Often secondary to PTSD, anxiety, depression, or chronic pain. Many veterans qualify without realizing the connection.

2. Migraines

Can be secondary to PTSD, TBI, neck injuries, or medication side effects.

3. Radiculopathy (Nerve Pain)

Commonly secondary to back or neck conditions. Many veterans only file for the spine issue and miss the nerve damage.

4. Depression & Anxiety

Can be secondary to chronic pain, tinnitus, physical limitations, or other service-connected disabilities.

5. GERD

Often secondary to PTSD, stress, or medications prescribed for service-connected conditions.

Why Secondary Conditions Matter

Filing secondary conditions can significantly increase your combined rating and ensure you receive compensation for the full impact of your service-connected disabilities.
